Support

When your dog is diagnosed with GOLPP, feelings of fear, confusion, and the need for support are common. This website aims to provide a comprehensive starting point for information and assistance. Additional resources are also available below.

A fantastic Facebook group is devoted to GOLPP, where thousands of pet families share stories, caregiving tips, support, and much more.

Until someone cares for a pet with a chronic illness, they may not grasp the strain experienced in caregiving. Stress, anxiety, and distancing are all common symptoms of caregiver burden. This website serves as an invaluable tool to assist you in navigating the caregiving journey.

Making end-of-life decisions for a pet is always difficult. When a pet experiences respiratory distress, immediate help is crucial, and the decision to euthanize may arise suddenly. However, as GOLPP progresses, hind end weakness may become a significant factor in decision-making and can often be a more difficult decision as your dog may still be happy and eating but simply cannot get up anymore. Here are two resources that may be helpful:

  • First, Dr. Mary Gardner has created a video to assist you in assessing your pet's quality of life. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJL4itdJn0s)

  • Second, Lap of Love offers in-home hospice and end-of-life services nationwide. Seeking support and saying goodbye at home can help ease some of the emotional strain experienced by both you and your pet compared to visiting a veterinary office.

Dr. Mary Gardner authored a comprehensive book titled "It's Never Long Enough," covering a wide range of topics related to senior and geriatric pets. The book includes valuable information on aging, symptoms, home care tips, quality of life assessments, hospice care, and end-of-life decisions. It even dedicates a full chapter to GOLPP, providing in-depth insights into this condition.
