LarPar vs GOLPP

We often hear the term LarPar used instead of GOLPP but they are very different.

LarPar (Laryngeal Paralysis)

LarPar is a broad term that encompasses any condition in which the laryngeal function is impaired in dogs. It can have various causes, and the term "larpar" is often used as a more general description. Laryngeal paralysis means that the muscles and nerves that control the movement of the laryngeal cartilage (located in the throat) are not working correctly. This can lead to airway obstruction and breathing difficulties, especially during physical activity or excitement.

GOLPP (Geriatric Onset Laryngeal Paralysis and Polyneuropathy)

GOLPP is a specific subtype of laryngeal paralysis that typically affects older dogs. It is characterized by a degeneration of nerves, including the vagus nerve, which controls laryngeal function. GOLPP is idiopathic, meaning the exact cause is not well understood, and it typically presents in older dogs. This condition is associated with a gradual onset of clinical signs, including voice changes, noisy breathing, and exercise intolerance, due to laryngeal dysfunction and a combination of neuropathies. In summary, LarPar is a more general term for laryngeal paralysis in dogs, while GOLPP is a specific type of laryngeal paralysis that tends to affect older dogs and is associated with nerve degeneration. GOLPP is a subset of laryngeal paralysis in the canine population.
